How to Start a Yoga Therapy Training Program

Kim M. Kim M.

In order to become a successful geriatric therapist, you will need to complete either an advanced yoga therapy training program at an accredited institute or your own certificate program at a local college or university.

For the aspiring yoga therapist, it’s a great place to start their career. Yes, you will study physiology and the skeletal structure in your very first 200-hour yoga instructor training, but that anatomy class will be more in-depth. After that you will move on to the Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body by looking at the skeletal system, then proceeding to the Nervous System, then the Musculoskeletal System, then the Endocrine system and then finally the Behavioral Systems. By the time you finish the coursework, you should know enough about all of these areas to start making small changes in your practice. Then the last thing you want to do is go out and get certified by one of these schools or programs to become a physical therapist.

A couple of good options are Certification by American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), which is the association that governs credentialing; and the Certification by the National Board for Certifying Agencies (NCBT). Neither of these offers medical office staff or instructors a license, but they do offer professional development opportunities. What you will find is that most physical therapy instructors take some of their business management courses or they take an associate’s degree in psychology and education. Some of the mental courses focus on human behavior or group counseling.

Some of the classes teach you how to set up a small practice and run it as a business. When you finish your medical school, you will have learned enough to get certified to work as an osteopath, an orthopedist, a physical therapist, an intern, a licensed nurse or a radiologist. The field of medicine has many different sub-specialties, including neurosurgery, cardiologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, surgeon, psychiatrist and so on. These sub-specialties each have their own requirements for obtaining a doctorate degree, including an outline of the course work and what you will study in the final year. Once you are done with your advanced education, you can choose to take a post-graduate residency or a fellowship in an approved area of medicine. Many students also have dreams of becoming an acupuncturist or a reflexologist.

These individuals combine the art of touch with bodywork. Acupuncturists use hands-on therapy to improve and heal the body. Reflexologists use hand movements and manipulations to treat and prevent illness. You can earn your accredited yoga therapy training certification in any of these fields by participating in an approved practicum or clinical yoga therapy program.

One of the most rewarding areas of the health care field is geriatric care, and that’s why training is so important. In order to become a successful geriatric therapist, you will need to complete either an advanced yoga therapy training program at an accredited institute or your own certificate program at a local college or university. Your certificate program can be attended on your own time, which makes it convenient for those with full-time employment, but it doesn’t limit you to the number of patients you can treat or the types of patients you can treat. The options for physical therapists are endless, and most states require therapists to be licensed.

There is a national certification board for physical therapists, and in many states, the therapist must be licensed before they can practice. However, the yoga training for therapists doesn’t require certification, so anyone who chooses to pursue a career as a physical therapist can do so. Yoga therapy training certification programs prepare students for positions as physical therapists in hospitals, assisted living facilities, rehab centers, and other health care settings, so becoming certified are an essential step in the career path of any physical therapist. Courses may also include components of clinical massage and Pilates. This exam is available online and can be obtained at any number of websites.
